On completion of Newcastle in January 2012 we will start working on our third hotel, Sleeperz Hotel Liverpool.
The Sleeperz team was delighted to be presented with a prestigious award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The hotel has joined an elite list of buildings across the whole of the UK and Europe to be recognised by RIBA, whose awards honour buildings that have achieved the highest architectural standards and also make a substantial contribution to the local environment.
President of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW), Pierre Wassenaar visited the hotel to present the award, which was accepted on behalf of Sleeperz by Chief Executive of Sleeperz Hotels, David Myers.
“Our Cardiff site fits perfectly with the Sleeperz Hotels ethos – utilising challenging sites very close to mainline railway stations to create a stylish urban hotel, said David.
“With Sleeperz, we really feel we have created a unique product in terms of both the style and standard of accommodation and to be recognised by such a respected industry body is a real achievement. We’re delighted with this RIBA accolade and look forward to rolling out this successful model across other sites.”
Speaking about the decision to award Sleeperz this prestigious accolade, Martin Knight, Chairman of the RIBA Awards Jury 2010 said:
“The whole Sleeperz operational model is an innovation and the resulting construction cost per room suggests many more sites could be made to work with this sort of thinking and with clever design tailored to small sites.
“This is not back to basics architecture but possibly a reinvention of the city-centre hotel model for a money-conscious world.
“The proximity to the railway is celebrated rather than hidden, with the full-height windows giving clear views of the trains passing silently behind acoustic glass.
“Sleeperz is a welcome addition to Cardiff’s landscape and the striking building has certainly succeeded in making a substantial contribution to its local environment, making it very worthy of this award.”
Following the great success of the landmark Cardiff hotel, Sleeperz Hotels is set to head to the North East with a brand new hotel coming soon for Newcastle.
Situated at the bottom of Westgate Road, close to the city’s Central Station, it will closely follow the original Cardiff model – aimed at providing guests with the city living experience within a hotel environment.
The design-led building will include 95 stylish bedrooms – with accommodation targeted at both the business and leisure traveller – a café-bar and meeting rooms.
The £7.5m six-storey development was given the go-ahead by Newcastle City Council planning committee after being told by their planning officers that the scheme will improve the area.
Experts from English Heritage also told the council’s planning committee that the development would have a positive impact on the conservation area, with the historic railway arches in Westgate Road to be converted and incorporated into the scheme.
Sleeperz will once again be working in close co-operation with Network Rail to develop a highly visible and recognisable landmark hotel in Newcastle. Maximum use will be made of space, with the building’s striking glass façade allowing light to flood through the building.
Its 95 bedrooms will all feature internet access, with complimentary wi-fi and hard-wired broadband connection, together with free local and national phone calls. Other facilities will include a café-bar providing an all-day contemporary food and drinks menu, together with meeting room services designed for the business visitor, with rooms priced at between £60 and £155 a night.
Head of Marketing and Sales, Javeed Anwar, said: “Sleeperz will offer an affordable and quality lifestyle alternative to mainstream limited service hotels and the more expensive mid market hotels in the north-east capital.
“No element of style will be sacrificed in creating quality compact high specification rooms with fresh, colourful and contemporary interiors that create a sense of modern urban living.
“Newcastle is already an extremely vibrant city, and with all the current development that’s taking place it is fast becoming a must-visit destination – for both business and leisure travellers.”
“The site for our next hotel fits perfectly with the Sleeperz Hotels ethos – utilising irregular shaped sites very close to mainline railway stations to create distinctive landmark buildings.
“This is a very exciting time for us as we look ahead to the official launch of Sleeperz Hotels in Cardiff next month, to be followed by the introduction of the new hotel concept to Newcastle, Manchester and the rest of the UK.”
The Sleeperz Cardiff team was delighted when the hotel was chosen as the location for one of Doctor Who star Matt Smith’s latest photoshoots.
He’s come a long way since the stripy knitted scarf and it’s safe to say that the time travelling Doctor Who of 2010 is now something of a style icon.
Unsurprising then that current star Matt is a regular in the gossip columns and celebrity pages and he was happy to chat with staff and guests about his experiences.
Chosen as the setting because of the distinctive style and modern interior, even the roof of the hotel was made use of as Matt took in the fabulous city views – wearing a leopard print coat to do so!
Sleeperz General Manager Laura Peeroo is a self-confessed Doctor Who fanatic, glued to every episode and regularly checking out the latest instalments at the now famous exhibition in the Bay.
Describing the visit as probably her best ‘day at the office’, Laura said:
“I love everything to do with Doctor Who and although David Tennant just pips Matt to the post when it comes to my all time favourite (sorry Matt!), he comes a very close second and I’m a big fan.
“Matt’s added a new dimension and brought it to the attention of an even bigger fan base and to have him in the hotel was just amazing.
“It’s really exciting as Sleeperz has such a distinctive design that we’re being approached quite a lot now by photographers and production companies who want to shoot in such a unique space.
“I’m not quite sure anyone will top Doctor Who in my eyes though – we’ll have to wait and see about that one!”
