  • Sleeperz Guide to Britain’s best Christmas Experiences

    Edinburgh Christmas Markets

The Christmas holiday season is in full flow as the big day draws nearer.

In between juggling your Christmas food shop with buying presents, writing cards, the office Christmas Party and watching the finals of Strictly Come Dancing and X-Factor – remember to fit in a trip to see some of Britain’s best Christmas experiences.

With hotels in Newcastle, Edinburgh and Cardiff, we’ve chosen a handful of unmissable Christmas experiences to recommend to our guests staying in these three great cities.

Timeless Tradition – Fenwick’s Window, Newcastle

Fenwick’s Window is an annual animated Christmas window display showcased in the Northumberland Street frontage of Fenwick Newcastle, one of the city’s biggest and oldest department stores.

The iconic Newcastle store was opened by John James Fenwick in 1882 and was the first of 11 stores in the much-loved independent chain.

Each Christmas Fenwick’s Window has a different theme and it is revealed to the public early in November and stays in place until the January sales.

This year’s theme is called ‘Once Upon a Christmas,’ and tells the story of how Santa’s sleigh crashed into Fenwick’s Newcastle store and how his helpers – trusty elves and reindeers – manage to save the day and deliver all the presents on time; thanks mainly to a magical carpet.

Catch a glimpse of the window here:

Expect queues and lots of oohs and aah’s as the display is often interactive and heart warmingly beautiful.

You can walk to Fenwick’s Window easily from Sleeperz Newcastle, one of the closest and best budget hotels near Newcastle Central Station.

Edinburgh’s Christmas – 6 weeks of Festive Fun

Edinburgh’s Christmas is a spectacular, six-week season of festive entertainment in the heart of the city.

Taking place in St Andrew Square, East Princes St Gardens and the Royal Mile, the festival features a host of shows in the beautiful Spiegeltent, as well as ice skating, markets and rides, including the Big Wheel and the 60-metre Star Flyer, with breathtaking views over the city.

Plus, brand new for 2015 is the stunning Street of Light on the Royal Mile.

Over 3.6 million people visited Edinburgh’s Christmas in 2014 and it looks set to be even bigger and better in 2015.

Cityroomz Edinburgh is our sister brand of budget hotel and is situated perfectly within five minutes’ walk of Princes Street and The Royal Mile.

Rooms start from £49 pp pn at Cityroomz.

    Marvel at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland

Cardiff’s biggest and best Christmas spectacle is its Winter Wonderland, complete with an alpine village, ice rink, funfair and attractions.

The Winter Wonderland is set up outside Cardiff’s iconic City Hall building and runs Monday to Sunday 12am to 9pm until December 21st.

From the 21st it’s open from 10am to 9pm but is closed Christmas Day, reopening on Boxing Day.

There’s no better way to have fun with the family than skating on an ice rink and experiencing the rides and stalls of an old fashioned funfair.

If you want to enjoy a little ‘apres skate,’ then adults can savour a hot Gluhwein or large stein in the Bierkeller Bar, feast on German sausages or freshly made Crepes in the authentic Alpine village chalet.

  • Live it up in Newcastle’s new Lounge Bar and Lobby

Stay the night in a Sleeperz Hotels and our hope is that you feel you’ve had a stylish hotel stay for a lot less than you pay in mainstream full service big brand hotels.

You can choose from three great cities: Cardiff, Newcastle or Edinburgh and pay budget prices, but scratch the surface of Sleeperz Hotels and you’ll find those cool little extras you just don’t get in ‘inns’ and ‘lodges’ that all the look the same.

One of the things that excites our team is the constant quest to do things that bit better than before, which is why we’ve given a makeover to the lobby, lounge bar and restaurant at our popular Newcastle hotel.

The lobby and lounge bar was an airy, open plan space – great for a breakfast to kick start a busy day – or for catching up with emails in a private booth, but, not quite right for sinking into a comfy chair with a coffee or laughing late into the small hours with friends.

5 ways we transformed our Newcastle Lounge Bar and Lobby

    Raising the Bar

Quite literally, we raised the bar. New stylish shelving and mirrors were set higher to showcase the premium drinks range on offer including Glenmorangie Scotch Whisky, Tanqueray Gin, Tattinger Champagne, Jack Daniels and Craft Ales like BrewDog and MeanTime.

    Perfect and private

Our old lounge bar was open plan, chic and cool, but the high ceiling and feature well space meant sound echoed and noise carried.

We’ve installed stunning silver voiles around our feature booths to stop sound travelling, and create a warm, intimate atmosphere best enjoyed by groups of friends and couples.

    Stylish Seating

We’ve really gone to town with new Suri Yanang style Japanese butterfly seats and cool chess pawn shaped stools.

At night with dimmed lighting and chilled music, the space takes on a decadent vibe.

    More for mornings

When the sun comes up breakfast is served in the lounge bar and we’ve expanded it to make it even easier to enjoy a hot cooked breakfast or continental style croissants, sliced cold meats, fresh fruit, berries and granola.

A lobby to kick back in

The team at Hampton Design sold us on the idea of a cool and cosy space where you can sink into your seat and surf on your smartphone, or in rare cases read something printed on paper instead of an Amoled screen.

In came an abstract feature wall, with striking bookcase wallpaper, a free standing cube-like magazine stand for media like Conde Nast Traveller and Wired Magazine and the daily newspapers.

Add to that our free & fast wi-fi and we feel we’ve got the ideal place to kick back, relax and plan your day in Newcastle – or just recover from the night before.

Next time you stay with us at Sleeperz Hotel Newcastle, let us know what you think of its new lounge bar and lobby?

We value what our customers say and it’s often the difference between a hotel stay that’s just okay or one that’s great. We hope you like what we’ve done with the place?
