  • Three of the best New Year’s Eve Breaks

    Newcastle on New Year's Eve

When the last cracker is pulled, left-over Turkey turned to soup and the wrapping and boxes consigned to the bin bag, the thoughts of many turn to a New Year and how to celebrate it.

When we read this blog by Holiday Cottages, we noticed Sleeperz Hotels has design-led budget hotels in three of its Top-10 UK New Year’s Eve destinations.

We wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t share a round-up of some of the best events, gigs, parties and experiences that you can enjoy on NYE while staying with Sleeperz in Cardiff, Newcastle or Edinburgh.

    EDINBURGH

Some parties become so big they take on a life of their own. Think Mardi Gras in New Orleans?

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is now one of those must-visit events and is now billed as ‘Scotland’s New Year Festival’ – three days of events and bands, with audiences from every corner of the globe.

Our sister hotel Cityroomz Edinburgh is in the heart of Edinburgh’s trendy West End, near Waverley Station and Prince’s Street, and is a perfect base for your Hogmanay knees up.

This year’s Hogmanany features the traditional Street Party and fireworks on December 31, but there’s also a torch-lit procession the night before, a concert with Paolo Nutini in Prince’s Street Gardens and a mass group ceilidh in the old Town.

For the truly hardy, you can finish off by taking part in the Loony Dook, a fancy dress themed dip in the River Forth at South Queensferry.

Most of the events are individually ticketed but some event packages are available for the entire festival.

    NEWCASTLE

A little further South of Edinburgh is Newcastle, the Geordie Capital, and the favourite UK city of readers of The Guardian and Observer newspapers.

Newcastle’s New Year fireworks are often compared to those in London and Edinburgh, as the sight of colours bursting over the iconic Tyne Bridge and Quayside attracts huge crowds year on year.

So special is New Year in The Toon that the city has created its own mystical Winter Festival.

Gather at the Monument at the top of Grey Street, from 4.30pm on December 31 to join a Carnival Parade featuring torchbearers, puppeteers and magical masked creatures inspired by folklore, myths and legends.

The carnival is free and travels through the city’s streets before finishing at Newcastle Civic Centre for the midnight celebrations and fireworks displays.

Sleeperz Hotel Newcastle is less than two minutes’ walk from Grey Street and perfectly located for The Diamond Strip, Bigg Market and Quayside night spots.

    CARDIFF

The Welsh Capital sits at number three in the Holiday Cottages NYE list and there are some cool ways to see in 2017 while staying at Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff.

Want to go big? With glitz, glamour, luxury and mystery?

Then try The Mysterious Masquerade at Missoula Bars, for a ‘My Playhouse’ evening of burlesque dancing, fire breathing and world class DJ’s on the top of their game after the summer seasons in Ibiza.

If you like things slightly more traditional then the New Year’s Eve Gala Ball at five-star St David’s Hotel is black tie and inspired by the musical traditions of New York City, with music inspired by jazz and the classic American songbook.

For something a bit more light hearted and family friendly, you could check out ‘The Hoff’ in Panto as David Hasselhoff plays Captain Hook in Peter Pan at Cardiff New Theatre. Performances start at 1pm and 5pm.

Alternatively, how about an evening on the ice with skating at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland?
