The Christmas holiday season is in full flow as the big day draws nearer.
In between juggling your Christmas food shop with buying presents, writing cards, the office Christmas Party and watching the finals of Strictly Come Dancing and X-Factor – remember to fit in a trip to see some of Britain’s best Christmas experiences.
With hotels in Newcastle, Edinburgh and Cardiff, we’ve chosen a handful of unmissable Christmas experiences to recommend to our guests staying in these three great cities.
Timeless Tradition – Fenwick’s Window, Newcastle
Fenwick’s Window is an annual animated Christmas window display showcased in the Northumberland Street frontage of Fenwick Newcastle, one of the city’s biggest and oldest department stores.
The iconic Newcastle store was opened by John James Fenwick in 1882 and was the first of 11 stores in the much-loved independent chain.
Each Christmas Fenwick’s Window has a different theme and it is revealed to the public early in November and stays in place until the January sales.
This year’s theme is called ‘Once Upon a Christmas,’ and tells the story of how Santa’s sleigh crashed into Fenwick’s Newcastle store and how his helpers – trusty elves and reindeers – manage to save the day and deliver all the presents on time; thanks mainly to a magical carpet.
Catch a glimpse of the window here:
Expect queues and lots of oohs and aah’s as the display is often interactive and heart warmingly beautiful.
You can walk to Fenwick’s Window easily from Sleeperz Newcastle, one of the closest and best budget hotels near Newcastle Central Station.
Edinburgh’s Christmas – 6 weeks of Festive Fun
Edinburgh’s Christmas is a spectacular, six-week season of festive entertainment in the heart of the city.
Taking place in St Andrew Square, East Princes St Gardens and the Royal Mile, the festival features a host of shows in the beautiful Spiegeltent, as well as ice skating, markets and rides, including the Big Wheel and the 60-metre Star Flyer, with breathtaking views over the city.
Plus, brand new for 2015 is the stunning Street of Light on the Royal Mile.
Over 3.6 million people visited Edinburgh’s Christmas in 2014 and it looks set to be even bigger and better in 2015.
Cityroomz Edinburgh is our sister brand of budget hotel and is situated perfectly within five minutes’ walk of Princes Street and The Royal Mile.
Rooms start from £49 pp pn at Cityroomz.
Marvel at Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland
Cardiff’s biggest and best Christmas spectacle is its Winter Wonderland, complete with an alpine village, ice rink, funfair and attractions.
The Winter Wonderland is set up outside Cardiff’s iconic City Hall building and runs Monday to Sunday 12am to 9pm until December 21st.
From the 21st it’s open from 10am to 9pm but is closed Christmas Day, reopening on Boxing Day.
There’s no better way to have fun with the family than skating on an ice rink and experiencing the rides and stalls of an old fashioned funfair.
If you want to enjoy a little ‘apres skate,’ then adults can savour a hot Gluhwein or large stein in the Bierkeller Bar, feast on German sausages or freshly made Crepes in the authentic Alpine village chalet.
Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff is positioned perfectly in the centre of Wales’ capital, only 300m from the train station and close to the Millennium Stadium. There’s no better place to stay if you are planning to stay overnight in Cardiff this Christmas and New Year.
So there you have it, three of Britain’s best Christmas experiences and all within easy reach of a Sleeperz Hotel.
