Sleeperz Hotels left luggage helps the homeless

Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff has been fundraising to help the homeless

Not everyone is lucky enough to enjoy a stay in a hotel.

According to Housing charity Shelter, 300,000 people in Britain are homeless and the numbers are rising.

The team at Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff care passionately about their city and their community, which is why they’ve been raising money to help rough sleepers in the Welsh capital.

Laura Peeroo, general manager at Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff, and her team came up with the idea of asking guests to pay £1 to store their luggage, before check-in or after check-out, with proceeds going to The Huggard Centre, a Cardiff homeless charity.

The Huggard Centre works to tackle homelessness in Cardiff and runs a day centre that is open 365 days a year, a 20 bed hostel and 14 shared houses with support for 53 tenants. In only seven months, Cardiff’s left luggage scheme raised £2357.47 from donations and Sleeperz Hotels Head Office agreed to donate an additional £500. So far, the total raised is £2857.47.

Rob Milligan, social enterprise manager at The Huggard Centre, said: “A huge thank you to the staff and customers of Sleeperz. I was really impressed by the idea and how well it worked.

With this donation we will be able to continue to provide support and advice, clothing, washing facilities, accommodation, recreation, personal development, hot meals and where possible volunteering opportunities for our service users to regain their confidence before moving back into the local community.”

Laura Peeroo, said: “We’re so grateful for the opportunity to support The Huggard Centre and those who find themselves homeless in Cardiff. Sleeperz Hotel Cardiff will be continuing its support and fundraising activities in the future. We’d like to thank all of our generous guests who donated money to leave their luggage and help others.”
