2021 was the Summer of staycations.
Staycation = natty name for holidaying at home.
Things might have moved on, planes are criss-crossing the sky again but not everyone is ready to dust off the passport and wheel out the suitcase.
If you’re happier at home, there’s never been a better time to Rediscover Dundee, the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design and a contender for Scotland’s coolest small city break.
And, when it comes to staycations, there’s no better place than Dundee – winner of UK Staycation City of the Year 2021.
3 Days in Dundee – On Staycation
Dundee has truly put itself on the map and is bursting with brave new confidence.
The industrial waterfront, famous for arctic whaling and jute exports, has undergone a £1billion makeover and now houses hotels, independent eateries, a Riverwalk trail and world leading visitor attractions like V&A Museum Dundee – Scotland’s first Design Museum.
Staycation Dundee Day 1
Enjoy a long lie-in and a super-tasty Sleeperz breakfast in our lounge bar before popping across the street to the V&A Museum, the incredible museum of art and design which cost £80m to build. It’s Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s first building in Britain and is the only Victoria and Albert museum outside of London. There’s a rolling programme of events, exhibitions and self guided trails waiting for you to explore.
You’ll need to book your tickets for specific exhibitions in advance and they cost between £6 and £12, normal entry to the Museum is free but runs on specific time slots, which you still need to book.
Lunch at Tatha Café and Restaurant in the V&A or enjoy some takeaway food on its Allan outdoor Terrace before exploring the RRS Discovery, the polar research ship used by Captain Scott on his expedition to Antartica.
Hear the heroic stories from two long winters when RRS Discovery was frozen into the arctic ice at the award-winning Discovery Point museum.
Don’t forget to get a selfie with the cool Penguins or saunter up the Perth Road to check out its cool indie cafes and shops. Cap off the day with drinks at speakeasy style bar Draffen’s – it’s something of a local secret.
Staycation Dundee Day 2
Out and About in Fife and Angus
Sleeperz Hotel Dundee is right above Dundee Rail Station, so take the stairs and hop on the first train to Leuchars to visit St Andrews, a quaint historic University town and the ‘Home of Golf.’
You don’t have to be a golf-lover to enjoy a day in St Andrews. Its West Sands Beach was made famous in the opening scenes of film ‘Chariots of Fire,’ and it’s easily one of Scotland’s most beautiful places to take a bracing romantic stroll.
A beach walk will build up an appetite for fish and chips or something more sizeable at the town’s many great eateries. Blackhorn Burgers is seriously good as is Little Italy on Logie’s Lane, pre-booking required.
Families will love St Andrews Aquarium on The Scores and rattling round the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral. The town is compact and its three cobbled streets have so many nooks and crannies to discover treats like Janetta’s Gelateria, world famous for its Iron Bru ice cream.
If you have a car then Fife and Angus offer so much more to families on a Staycation in Scotland. Within easy reach you can explore, The Scottish Deer Centre, Glamis Castle, Scotland’s Secret Bunker, Elie, Earlsferry and Broughty ferry beaches, Tentsmuir Forest and Camperdown Country Park.
Staycation Dundee: Day 3
Stay Local and Chill
Dundee is full of surprises.
The city streets are full of statues symbolising Dundee’s colourful creative past.
You’ll pass characters from The Beano and Dandy, Britain’s longest running and best-loved children’s comic, from local publisher D.C Thomson, penguins, dragons and Lemmings –stars of the global gaming blockbuster invented in the city on the River Tay.
There’s a thriving cultural scene in Dundee ranging from street art and murals to film and jewellery making, centred around Dundee Contemporary Art centre. The Jute Bar in DCA is a laid back coffee house by day, funky bistro and bar by night.
The city’s chilled arty vibe even comes through in Dundee’s foodie scene.
Agacan, a Turkish Kebab House on Perth Road, offers diners tasty kebabs and an art gallery to enjoy.
Stretch your legs with a walk to the top of Dundee Law, a 174-metre high hill and the remains of a 400-million year old volcanic plug and sill. It’s the highest point in the city and offers a stunning view. Walking time is between two and three hours top to bottom.
If you’ve still got an appetite for more local culture then visit the McManus Galleries or the Verdant Works, where you can connect with Dundee’s rich history and its connections to the Jute, Jam and Journalism industries.
This city by the sea was once famed for whaling, marmalade making and publishing and has been reinvented into one of Scotland’s coolest little city breaks.
Cap off your staycation at Sleeperz Hotels Dundee with a dram from our impressive collection of single malt whiskies then enjoy one final night’s rest on one of our Sleepeezee handmade mattresses.
